Is  BearShare free?  

Yes it is. You can use BearShare to download music and videos from other peers. Some of the content on BearShare requires an active Premium Subscription in order to be downloaded (this content is identified by Gold CD icons in your search results.)

Do I need to register?

No, you can use BearShare without registering a free account, but many core features require that you have an account (e.g. downloading.) Registering an account is totally free, only takes a minute, but enables tons of features that simply wouldn't work otherwise.
What is the difference between BearShare 10 and the older versions?
BearShare 10 has many great new features: 

  • Faster Downloads
  • Millions of songs and videos to download and listen to
  • New Library Views
  • iPod & MP3 player support
  • Cool features like playlists, moods, artist biographies, and discographies
  • It's 100% legal to use.

What types of files can I download using  BearShare?   

  • Windows media files: asf, asx, avi
  • Windows media Audio files: wmv, wax, wm, wma, wmd, wmx, wmz, wvx
  • Movie files: mpeg, mpg, mpa, mpe, m1v, mp2, mp2v
  • MP3 audio files: mp3

Is BearShare legal to use?

Using BearShare is 100% legal.   The service employs state of the art filtering technology, and is approved by the major record labels and RIAA. Downloading from BearShare is entirely legal, and will not get you in any kind of trouble whatsoever.

What is the "Discover" section?

Discover lets you browse millions of songs by genre, artists, moods and more. Each artist page contains the artist's discography, related artists, bio, videos, and online fans.

What do I get when I subscribe to BearShare?

With a Premium Subscription, you can download unlimited Premium (BearShare Premium content) tracks, and play them for as long as your subscription remains active.   You can also opt to buy your favorite songs so that they remain playable regardless of your subscription status.

Can I put my BearShare subscription music onto an MP3 player?

Yes you can. You can purchase Premium Tracks in order to transfer them to a Windows 7 Logo branded MP3 player. You can also get a ToGo Subscription and transfer unlimited tracks to your device! For a list of devices compatible with the ToGo subscription, please visit: Windows 7  Logo branded MP3 Players. You can right-click any Premium Track in the Search or Library section, and either click Download, or Buy Song.

Can I load my BearShare subscription music onto my iPod?

Yes you can. You can purchase Premium Tracks in order to transfer them to an iPod device (purchases are MP3s). You can right-click any Premium Track in the Search or Library section, and either click Download, or Buy Song. 
Note: The iPod Touch and iPhone are not supported yet.

Can I download movies, software, images, and documents with BearShare?

The BearShare community focuses on music and short videos. As such, only music and short video files are supported.

Can I burn my BearShare music to CDs with BearShare?

Yes you can. Free Tracks (BearShare free content) can be burned to a CD for free. Premium Tracks (BearShare Premium content) need to be purchased in order to be burned to a CD.

I forgot my BearShare password. How can I retrieve it?

Can I use my username from the old BearShare (BearShare 5) to sign into BearShare?

No, you will need to register a new account in BearShare once you install it. Only accounts created in BearShare 6 and up will work with the new BearShare.

Does BearShare contain adware and spyware?

No, BearShare is 100% clean, and does not include any spyware or adware.

What are the system requirements to run BearShare on my computer?

Operating system:   

  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7.
  • BearShare is not supported on Windows 95, NT, 98, Me or Macintosh.


    800 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system); Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended.


    256 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended.

Hard Drive:

     Approximately 45 MB for BearShare, and 18 MB for Windows Media Player if it is not already installed.


  •     Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and above.
  •     To download the the latest Internet Explorer from Microsoft, click here.
  •     Windows Media Player 11 or higher.
  •     To download the latest Windows Media Player from Microsoft, click here.

An internet connection is required for registration and downloads.

Instant Messages

Can I transfer files from my computer to other users through BearShare Instant Messaging?

Yes, you can share photos with the person you're talking with on BearShare's instant messaging. You cannot share any other types of files through the instant messaging feature.

Do I need to be a subscriber to use Instant Messaging in BearShare?

Not at all, instant messaging in BearShare is free like the rest of the software, and is there for everyone.

Technical Troubleshooting

Error Message: "Unable to find install.log"
This error occurs during the uninstall process, and causes the uninstall to fail. To fix this problem, please perform the following steps:

  • Open BearShare and click Menu > File > Exit.
  • Now go to, download the latest version of BearShare, and install it. This will overwrite the one that you already have installed.
  • After completing the BearShare installation, uncheck the "Run BearShare now" option in the installer, then click Finish.


You may now proceed with uninstalling BearShare via the Windows Control Panel, and it should successfully uninstall this time around.
